Stephen is chief executive of FinTech Scotland, the enterprise established by the Scottish government, University of Edinburgh and the private sector to drive economic growth in financial services through innovation, collaboration and inclusion.
Fintech Scotland’s ambition is to create an integrated and thriving economic environment through the provision of funding, connections, infrastructure and talent that recognises and responds to the needs of all stakeholders and connects Scotland to other global fintech centres.
A focus for FinTech Scotland is bringing together a number of key drivers for the sector, including: the ideas and creativity of entrepreneurs and innovators; the resources and experience of the established financial sector; the capabilities of technology firms; the economic and social objectives of the public sector; the innovation environments of accelerators and incubators; the capital of investors; the expertise of professional services firms; people development by skills agencies; and research and development from universities. Stephen has a track record and reputation for implementing customer-focused, technology-enabled profitable initiatives in a wide range of financial services organisations. This has included senior executive roles with large institutions such as Standard Life and Barclays, as well as small innovative enterprises.
Throughout his career, Stephen has been an influential advocate of making financial services more open, creative and inclusive to all through new innovative technologies, encouraging diversity and progressive ways of working as well as improved collaboration across stakeholders and participants. His financial services leadership career has also included a number of non-executive director roles, including with: Scottish Financial Enterprise; the Institute of Financial Services; the Chartered Insurance Institute; and the Financial Services Authority. Stephen is currently a non-executive director of Marketing Edinburgh, the commercial organisation tasked with promoting the city as a leading leisure, learning and commercial destination for residents, visitors and business, as well as enhancing the international reputation and promoting sustainable economic development and growth.
Stephen is a frequent author of articles and regular contributor at major global conferences on subjects such as customer strategy and execution, fintech and insurtech innovation, and business change leadership.
Stephen lives with his wife and two teenage daughters in Edinburgh and is a competitive long-distance runner.
