Nicola Anderson

FinTech Scotland

Nicola is CEO of FinTech Scotland, a strategic cluster management organisation that works across the private, public and third sectors, as well as academia, to enable economic growth and inclusion in developing digital financial services.

Through her career Nicola has worked across the public and private sectors and her experience has involved leading business and organisational development with an emphasis on innovation, collaboration and customer focused strategies.

At FinTech Scotland, Nicola is leading the development of the fintech cluster with a focus on driving impactful and collaborative initiatives to advance fintech innovation and adoption across the digital economy, and building an inclusive and international fintech cluster focused on improved economic, social and environmental outcomes.

Nicola is passionate about the inclusive role fintech research and innovation can play in the future digital economy and the opportunity available across the UK through innovation. In 2021, she worked on developing the FinTech Scotland Research and Innovation roadmap to help accelerate the development of fintech innovation across Scotland and the UK. A pioneering tool, this roadmap supports the recommendations set out in the UK FinTech Review led by Ron Kalifa and is enabling greater industry collaboration through the action plan and leadership framework.

In addition to her role at FinTech Scotland, Nicola is part of the team leading the Global Open Finance Centre of Excellence, a collaborative initiative with the University of Edinburgh aimed at developing further fintech innovation through open finance data. In other strategic collaborations, Nicola has connected regulatory, legal and cyber expertise with the fintech cluster, including strategic engagement with Police Scotland, Scottish Business Resilience Centre, ScotlandIS and UK regulators, as well as an advisory role with LawTech Scotland.

Nicola works with the fintech SME community, supporting and mentoring SMEs in navigating the regulatory environment, with proposition development and business innovations focused on customer outcomes. Her experience in SME business development comes from a variety of industries including financial services with first-hand entrepreneurial experience from initiating and establishing her own business in the retail sector.

Nicola strives to build business success through diverse engagement and purposeful inclusive action. This approach has seen the development of FinTech Scotland’s consumer panel, which is enabling more fintech propositions to focus on prioritised and direct consumer needs, as well as helping to advance fintech consumer adoption and financial inclusion.

Nicola is a member of the Scottish government’s Financial Services Growth and Development Board, a body chaired by Scotland’s First Minister to provide strategic leadership for the financial services sector in Scotland. She is also a member of the Taskforce for Green and Sustainable Finance, an industry led body established to support the Scottish government’s contribution towards the global shift to net zero.

Before joining FinTech Scotland, Nicola was a part of the Financial Conduct Authority’s leadership team in the retail banking sector, where she led and contributed to the development of solutions needed to address industry issues following the financial crisis. This experience included leading regulatory oversight, engaged at board and executive level on a number of retail bank digital transformational changes and complex regulatory issues, working in collaboration with HM Treasury, the Bank of England and other bodies.
